Try to find out if your prospective new horse has had several owners. If the horse has had a lot of different owners -- especially if it looks like he's changed hands a lot recently, this could indicate a real problem with the horse. If the horse has had multiple owners, try to contact one or more of the former owners before you buy the horse. Former owners are much more likely to give you a clear version of what a horse is like than a current owner. Most people won't lie to you about a horse that they're trying to sell, but they will sugar coat the truth. Another thing that you can do to gather information about a horse is to have a vet inspect the horse for you. Most horses sell with a Coggins test and a health certificate, but this isn't nearly enough information to help you make a purchase decision. Contact a local vet directly and have him inspect the horse for you. This might cost you a few hundred dollars but may save you a lot of money in the long run if it stops you from purchasing the wrong horse.

Another very important thing that you can do when you're buying a horse online is to find out as much as you can about the seller of the horse. There are a lot of people out there who make money buying and selling problem horses. These aren't the best people to do business with when you're looking for your dream horse. A breeder with a Web site and many horses for sale may be a safer person to deal with than an individual with only a horse or two for sale although this isn't always the case. If an individual does have multiple horses for sale, you might want to look to see if they're horses that the person is raising or if they're horses that have been purchased. Horses that have been purchased aren't always a bad choice. People have many different reasons for selling a horse, and some of these horses may work really well for your purpose. In this situation ask questions. Find out why a horse is being sold, and use your own good judgment and common sense in deciding if the reason for selling makes the horse unfit for your purpose. In all situations make sure you have all the necessary contact information for your seller. This should include full name, phone number, physical address, email address and maybe even a Web site url. Use the seller's contact information to Google him/her. At the very least, you should be able to verify that the address and phone number that they're giving you is correct. Contact the seller at least once by phone as well as email. This will give you a better chance to get to know the seller as a person. You can also send them correspondence via mail to verify that they are who they say they are. Another thing that you can do is to arrange to make payment via PayPal. Make sure that your seller is verified by PayPal. This means that PayPal also believes that your seller is who he says he is. If your seller is living outside of the U.S., use caution. Many scams originate from foreign countries so take appropriate steps to protect yourself.

Gathering information is a good step in the right direction to successfully buy a horse online. Treat buying a horse a bit like you'd treat buying a used car so that you can avoid getting stuck with a lemon.
